Entertainment Interfaces
For the first time the track “Entertainment Interfaces” will take place together with the German HCI conference Mensch & Computer, the German e-learning conference DeLFI and the German Usability Professionals (UPA) track.
Within the past years the market of entertainment products has seen an overwhelming growth and has become an important part of the creative industries. This steady growth is not only based upon the changing demographics of users of interactive entertainment. One important reason is the diversification of interactive entertainment products converting more and more casual users into active consumers. The motion-sensitive controllers of the Nintendo Wii game console, the music instruments of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, and also products like Microsoft’s Natal which are currently in development offer innovative and user-friendly interfaces to attract new target groups. Computer- and videogames are not the only area the diversification changes: In the course of the growing media convergence new entertainment products evolve between the different fields of the creative industries. Interactive audio books, innovative toys and building blocks, game-based learning and serious games, virtual and augmented realities, and artistic installations and products give a first idea of the potential of this area.
The track “Entertainment Interfaces” offers researchers, developers and designers a platform to present innovative ideas in the area of interactive entertainment with a focus on interaction in games and other entertainment products and to discuss design challenges and the evaluation of entertainment interfaces. The aims of the track are to strengthen the awareness of the relevance of user-friendly and innovative interfaces for entertainment applications in the research community and in the public, to encourage the research activities and the education in this field, and to foster the knowledge transfer between researchers and developers. We like to emphasize the interdisciplinary background of the “Entertainment Interfaces” track and welcome contributions from the areas of computer science, psychology, design and engineering sciences as well as contributions from developers and designers working in the field of interactive entertainment.
In the course of the conference “Interaktive Kulturen” a doctoral consortium for all tracks will take place. It offers a platform for the presentation and discussion of ongoing and recently completed dissertation projects with other PhD candidates and domain experts.

Doctoral Consortium
In the course of the conference “Interaktive Kulturen” a doctoral consortium for all tracks will be offered. It opens a platform for presentation of ongoing and recently completed dissertation projects, for getting comments from experts of all participating disciplines, and for discussion. Thus the individual dissertation projects can be facilitated and an opportunity for exchange between doctoral candidates is offered. Future Ph. D. students can get encouragement, ideas, and orientation for their own projects.
Organisers and responsible for the selection process of the doctoral consortium are
- Prof. Dr. Thomas Herrmann (Ruhr-Universität Bochum)
- Prof. Dr. H. Ulrich Hoppe (Universität Duisburg-Essen)
- Prof. Dr. Nicole Krämer (Universität Duisburg-Essen)
- Prof. Dr. Michael Koch (Universität der Bundeswehr München)
Participation/Application
Interested participants are currently working on a dissertation project in the thematic area of the conferences “Mensch und Computer” (including interaction design, usability, CSCW), or “DeLFI” (including learning and teaching with interactive media as well as CSCL) or in the area of “Entertainment Interfaces” or have recently completed such a dissertation. Interested persons apply until 28 June 2010 with a brief abstract of their dissertation project (motivation, research questions, solution, (interim) results) with a length of maximal four pages. A template can be found at http://www.gi-ev.de/fileadmin/redaktion/2005_LNI/PDF/LNI-word-vorlage.doc, proposals can be submitted at https://www.conftool.com/interaktive-kulturen.de/.
Schedule
The doctoral consortium will be held as part of the conference “Interaktive Kulturen” on Wednesday, 15 September 2010, at the Duisburg campus of the University of Duisburg-Essen. In the course of the workshop the participants will (shortly) introduce their projects to each other. There will be time for discussion with the other participants and with domain experts from the involved disciplines.
Workshops
Workshop on Using Game Design and Affective Evaluation to improve User Experience and User Research
Workshop Background, Theme and Goals
Video games are highly complex software products with an increasing need for formal playtesting methods from user research and academia. Gaming is becoming a popular topic for HCI research including the establishment of novel interaction and evaluation methodologies and the formal assessment of existing practices.
Employing user research methods in game development, especially combined qualitative (e.g., questionnaires, interviews) and quantitative (e.g., EEG, EMG, game metrics) methods lead to a better understanding of the relationship and interactions between players and games.
In this workshop we want to explore how game design principles can be used to improve regular desktop software and how game design principles can be tested with novel methodologies.
Most knowledge of game design has been created during years of practice and is often based on personal experience of a game designer, which commonly comes from observing individual reactions to game mechanics. However, since such game design knowledge takes years to manufacture, faster insights into complex player behavior as a reaction to game mechanics are desirable.
The goals of this workshop are to provide (1) an overview of available methods and techniques of evaluating game design and (2) to foster a productive discussion on creating guidelines for studying users with affective evaluation methodologies.
Submission Topics
Submission topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Experimental game studies using affective measurement
- Usability or playability case studies
- Psychophysiological evaluation (e.g., EEG, EMG, EDA, HR, Eye Tracking, etc.)
- Game-based heuristic evaluation methods
- Concepts and theories relating to flow, immersion, and presence
- User/Player experience (UX) or gameplay experience
- Game design case studies for tying UX to desktop or web applications
- User-centred design (UCD)
- Studies of novel interaction practices for gaming (e.g. iPad, camera tracking, etc.)
- Game design evaluation principles for pervasive and ubiquitous gaming
- Modelling of player emotion for game evaluation
- Visualization techniques for quantitative player data
- Methodology reports for evaluation of game design and user interface design
- Guidelines for the evaluation of players and game design
- Industry perspectives on evaluating fun as part of UX
- Affective evaluation studies of computer games
- Game metrics and behavioral analysis of user actions and events in games
Submission Details
If you are interested in participation, please submit a 2-4 page position paper or a 2-4 page industrial case study to the workshop organizers using the LNI format.
Authors of accepted papers are expected to present their work at the workshop by giving a 15 minute presentation. Submissions of papers covering the topics of the workshop should be submitted by 1st of July 2010. Notification of acceptance will be sent out 12th of July 2010. At least one author from each accepted submission is expected to attend the workshop and register for the conference. Accepted submission will be compiled in the common workshop proceedings (Tagungsband der der M&C, DelFI und des Doktorandenkolloquiums). These proceedings will be published by the Logos Verlag. All proceedings will be additionally available in an electronic version (and online) at the conference date.
